A Cross-Country Freight Hauler hit by the high cost of fuel (as are all trucking companies today) had long-standing policies on idle time. Durability and cost studies show that ONE minute of idle time is equal to TWO minutes of operating time.
The company had a policy that idle time should be limited to 5 to 10 minutes unless the driver had to stay in the vehicle in very cold or hot temperatures. In any case, if hotel accommodations were available, company policy required the driver to take a room for the night and shut off the engine because a motel room is cheaper than keeping the engine idling.
After installing the Tracker System, idling times of up to 10 hours a day were recorded and extended idling incidents were documented at locations of restaurants at meal times where the engine was left idling. Even worse, longer idle times were recorded during sleep periods while parked at truck stops with lodging accommodations where the driver did not make use of the company-paid hotel room. The company was able to cut fuel costs and maintenance costs by using the Tracker System.
Our tracking system is also used by this customer to monitor the location of critical shipments and give customers accurate updates on estimated arrival times. The owner has been able to use the system to lower fuel costs by the ability to identify and rectify excessive idling and speeding. The Tracker System saves in HOURS what it costs in a MONTH.
